Shockbox Impact Sensor: Helping Fight ... - DroidNews.Net

As long as sports have existed, so have sports-related injuries. One injury in particular that has managed to capture the spotlight over recent years, is of course, the concussion. Head injuries, particularly concussions, have become a serious issue in both professional and youth sports.

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused when a blow to the head or body causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull, sometimes striking the skull and causing neurological impairments. The short-term effects can range from nausea and headaches, to difficulty with concentration, while long term effects of multiple concussions can lead to permanent brain damage and even death.

Throughout the years, better education of head trauma among athletes has led to increased safety precautions. Everything from official rule changes to state of the art safety equipment is now helping to decrease the risk of concussion as well as the permanent effects caused by them.

Despite all the great advances in professional and youth sports, traumatic brain injuries continue to remain a major cause for concern. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention):

  • Each year, U.S. emergency departments (EDs) treat an estimated 173,285 sports- and recreation-related TBIs, including concussions, among children and adolescents, from birth to 19 years.
  • During the last decade, ED visits for sports- and recreation-related TBIs, including concussions, among children and adolescents increased by 60%.
  • Overall, the activities associated with the greatest number of TBI-related ED visits included bicycling, football, playground activities, basketball, and soccer.

National surveillance in 9 high school sports:

  • TBI represents almost 9% of all injuries reported in the 9 sports
  • Numbers and rates are highest in football (55,007; 0.47 per 1000 athlete exposures) and girl?s soccer (29,167; 0.36 per 1000 athlete exposures)
  • A national survey of all sports- and recreation-related injuries among all ages demonstrates that 31% occurred in a sports facility and 20% in a school facility.

As you can see, these are scary statistics to look at, especially for any parent of a young athlete. So what else can be done to help prevent such injuries? I mean, sports aren?t going to go away, they?ve been much a part of human nature since, well? forever. So what can we do?

That?s one question the fine folks over at Impakt Protective hope to answer.

Concerned over the epidemic of concussions in youth sports, a US Marines technology veteran and a Hockey coach (who also happened to be a software operations guru) teamed up to create a simple, compatible and affordable sensor option for concussion management.

Introducing the Shockbox: a wireless impact sensor that alerts parents, coaches, or trainers when a hit is too hard. While that?s the essence of the device, it?s really much, much more:

  • Installs on Any Helmet ? The Shockbox attaches to almost any helmet using a new high bonding 3M adhesive tape (included). The sensor will not come off during normal use, and does not damage the helmet.
  • Impact Analysis ? When the Shockbox experiences a significant impact it will immediately send the raw impact data back to the Shockbox app, which uses complex mathematical analysis algorithms to calculate the impact magnitude and direction and correlate that to brain injury.
  • Wireless Bluetooth ? Immediate impact notification using the free app on your iOS, Android, or BlackBerry Smartphone. The Shockbox uses long-range Bluetooth technology to transmit an impact up to 100m (328ft) away.
  • Pair Entire Team ? Pair all your Shockboxes to one phone and receive all impacts on that phone. Whether it?s your whole family, team, or many teams, a virtually unlimited number of Shockboxes can be paired to one phone.
  • Share Impact Data ? Easily share impact data with others via Email, or one-click contact in an emergency.
  • Long Battery Life ? An unbelievably long 500 Hr battery life is possible using our active-sleep technology. The rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery charges quickly and reliably for years.

The Shockbox is the perfect example of using all the technological resources available to create an affordable hardware/software product that helps tackle an important issue while improving the quality of life. It?s not often we get to say that about the products we feature here on Cult of Android, but the Shockbox is a brilliant use of resources and we applaud Impakt Protective for their efforts.

Whether you?re a coach, a sports professional, or parent of a young athlete, we highly recommend exploring the option of adding a Shockbox to your list of safety gear. At the cost of $149.99, the Shockbox is no more than you?d pay for a top quality youth football helmet and a small price to pay for peace of mind. Its accompanying app is free to download and can be found in your respective app market.

Play hard, play safe.

Create A Profitable Online Store Course: An Interview With The ...

online store

Have you ever wondered how people and businesses go about selling their products on the internet and if it?s difficult create an online store? Steve Chou used to wonder the exact same things before he became a father five years ago. He wanted to find a way for his wife to quit her job to become a stay at home mom without losing one entire income stream. Through a lot of research, trial and error, and ultimately success, they started their own profitable online store and impressively made over $100,000 in the first year! After achieving success and getting numerous questions from people seeking advice on how to do the same, Steve founded the Create A Profitable Online Store Course.

He?s spent a lot of hours building out the course and has been featured in many media outlets including The New York Times and MSNBC. I?ve known Steve for years and recently met up with him in Denver. Curious to learn more about his business he shared with me his thoughts in the following interview.

What?s the number one hurdle people face when trying to start their own online store or business? What are some other obstacles people face?

Steve:The #1 hurdle that most people face is finding the right niche to pursue.?There is a delicate balance of demand vs competition that must be taken into consideration when deciding what to pursue.?If either your niche is too competitive or if there isn?t enough demand, you won?t be successful. The other big obstacle that most shopowners face is getting people in the door and traffic to their website.

How do you build a reputation of trust around your online store so that people are willing to input their credit card or Paypal information and make a purchase?

Steve: There are many ways to build trust.? First off, it?s important to add trust logos near forms fields where people are entering in sensitive information.?Also, adding real customer testimonials around key decision points is essential as well.?But overall, if you have a good looking website, that usually speaks volumes about your store credibility.

Tell us about how you decided to price your online store product at $499? Talk about the value you believe it provides. Is there a money back guarantee?

Steve: There is no other course out there that provides the level of personal support that my course provides. Every week, I hold office hours where I answer questions live.?In addition, I?m constantly adding new content to the course so the material will never go stale.?We are currently at over 100 videos and over 40 hours of video content that pretty much covers everything you need to know.?And you receive a lifetime membership to the site as part of your course fees.

Who is your typical buyer of your product? What is their demographics (gender, age, employment status, current income levels, etc)? What do you think their motivations are for buying your product?

Steve: Basically, my course appeals to anyone who wants to take control over their life and become their own boss. Due to the demographics of my blog, I attract a lot of couples who want to start a family and stay at home with their kids. But overall, anyone who has the desire to start their own business should consider signing up.

You currently make over $100,000 from your online store and are on track for a new record year. Is the figure in revenues, operating profits, or net profits?

Steve: We made 100K in profit during our first year of business and it continues to grow in the double and triple digits every year.

Is there a profitability point in time where you will be willing to quit your day job in order to spend more time with your family and do whatever else you enjoy doing? Is there some type of personal savings goal you have in mind that covers X amount of years of living expenses perhaps?

Steve: For me, quitting my job is not about the money at this point.? Between my businesses, I already make more money than I need.?The key for me is keeping my mind stimulated so I don?t get bored.?Right now, I design microprocessors at my day job and it forces me to use my brain.

If your store?s profitability is irrelevant for quitting your job, then what holds you back from quitting your day job? You mentioned you like your job and find it to be quiet cushy, however, surely there are other things you?d rather do?

Steve: Currently, I?m trying to figure that out. I?m not the type of person that can play tennis or golf every day or travel 9 months out of the year.?I need constant mental stimulation.?If I ever quit my day job, I?d probably start another business.

If you are a normal person who can generate over $100,000 in revenue over a few short years, why don?t others do the same with the advancement and ubiquity of the internet?

Steve: I believe that everyone can do it.?However, there are very few people that have the necessary persistence. That is why it is so important to find a mentor who can provide you with guidance so you avoid making silly mistakes.

Tell us about a time, or times when the online business didn?t go so well. What did you do to carry on? Did you ever want to shut the business down or neglect it for a while?

Steve: Our online store had the luxury of being profitable since day one.?The beauty of the internet is that it doesn?t cost much money to start and maintain a website.?Therefore, we never ever considered shutting the business down. While there were many slow periods in the beginning, once we got into a groove the business kind of snowballed.

Is China Over-Investing and Does it Matter? | The Big Picture

Macro Notes

EIGHT DAYS
Peter Boockvar

The move higher this morning in the S&P futures takes it back to the 50 day moving average of 1416 on hopes that negotiations in DC are proceeding as hoped. We'll get a deal and stocks will like it temporarily but I repeat my belief that it won't be a good one in terms of honestly facing the fiscal challenges at the same time tax increases will hurt economic growth as it's by definition contractionary. To quantify according to the CBO, in 2012 the US Federal Gov't is expected to spend $3.56T (and similar amount in 2013) which equates to...

US economy grew at 2.7 percent rate in summer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. economy grew at a 2.7 percent annual rate from July through September, much faster than first thought. The strength is expected to fade in the final months of the year because of uncertainty about looming tax increases and government spending cuts.

The Commerce Department said Thursday that growth in the third quarter was significantly better than the 2 percent rate estimated a month ago. And it was more than twice the 1.3 percent rate reported for the April-June quarter.

The main reason for the upward revision to the gross domestic product was businesses restocked at a faster pace than previously estimated. That offset weaker consumer spending growth.

GDP measures the nation's total output of goods and services ? from restaurant meals and haircuts to airplanes, appliances and highways.

Most economists say economic growth is slowing to below 2 percent in the current October-December quarter. That's generally considered too weak to rapidly lower the unemployment rate.

Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, said companies are likely restocking more slowly now. Businesses typically cut back on restocking when they think consumers will spend less. Consumer spending drives roughly 70 percent of economic activity.

Economists cite two reasons for the anticipated weakness in consumer and business spending.

Superstorm Sandy halted business activity along the East Coast in late October and November. And spending may weaken in the final weeks of the year, if lawmakers and Obama fail to reach a deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff." That's the name for sharp tax increases and spending cuts that would occur in January without a deal.

Companies are "likely thinning inventories just in case Congress fails to do its job, which is always a possibility," said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors.

A separate report Thursday showed the negative impact of Superstorm Sandy is starting to fade. The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell 23,000 to a seasonally adjusted 393,000 last week, the Labor Department said. It was the second straight drop after Superstorm Sandy had driven applications to 451,000 three weeks ago.

Still, consumers and businesses appeared to be more cautious over the summer, according to the GDP report.

Consumer spending grew at a weaker 1.4 percent rate in the third quarter, down from the 2 percent rate estimated a month ago and nearly in line with the 1.5 percent rate in the second quarter.

Businesses spending on equipment and software fell at an annual rate of 2.7 percent in the third quarter, the first decline since the depths of the recession in April-June 2009.

The report showed continued strength in homebuilding, which rose at an annual rate of 14.2 percent. And government spending expanded at an annual rate 3.5 percent, marking its first positive contribution to overall economic growth in two years. The increase was driven by a big jump in defense spending.

While economists predict slower growth in the final months of the year, several reports suggest economic activity picked up in October and early November. And if Congress and the White House reach agreement and avoid the fiscal cliff, economic growth could accelerate next year, many economists say.

A Federal Reserve survey released Tuesday showed improved consumer spending and steady home sales helped lift growth from October through early November in most parts of the United States. The one exception was the Northeast, where the storm led to widespread disruptions.

The Labor Department said employers added 171,000 jobs last month and hiring in September and August was stronger than previously thought.

Rising home values, more hiring and lower gas prices pushed consumer confidence in November to the highest level in nearly five years, according to the Conference Board.

A better mood among consumers appears to have encouraged businesses to invest more in October after pulling back over the summer.

There are already signs that consumer optimism is leading to more spending. A record number of Americans visited stores and shopping websites over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, according to a survey by the National Retail Federation.

Bombardier signs record $7.8 billion deal with VistaJet

TORONTO/LONDON (Reuters) - Bombardier Inc has signed its largest business jet deal ever, a $7.8 billion order from Swiss charter operator VistaJet for up to 142 Global aircraft that highlights the Canadian company's success in an expanding segment of the market.

The deal, which eclipses Bombardier's previous record sale,$7.3 billion worth of Challenger planes to NetJets in June, sent Bombardier shares 8 percent higher.

"By any standard, this is a historic order for Bombardier," said Steve Ridolfi, president of Bombardier Business Aircraft, a unit of the Montreal-based plane and train maker.

VistaJet, which operates from London, Moscow, Dubai, Beijing and other locations, has placed a firm order for 56 jets worth $3.1 billion, with options on 86 more planes. Bombardier, the world's third-biggest planemaker, said deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2014.

The order's $7.8 billion value is based on 2012 list prices, but airlines typically negotiate steep discounts when they buy planes in bulk.

"This is the single largest transaction placed with any manufacturer in the entire history of business aviation," VistaJet founder and Chairman Thomas Flohr said at a press conference with Bombardier in London.

The planes will play a key part in VistaJet's expansion plans, he said, and its push to make business aviation more accessible in "embryonic" markets.

The aircraft will serve growth regions such as Russia, Kazakhstan, China, the Middle East and all of Africa, Flohr said, along with the U.S. East Coast and West Coast.

"VistaJet is a longtime Bombardier customer and exclusive operator of Bombardier business jets," said National Bank Financial analyst Cameron Doerksen. "The company had previously indicated that it was contemplating additional large orders, but the size of this order has to be considered a surprise."

VistaJet's firm order is for 25 Global 5000, 25 Global 6000 and six Global 8000 jets. The optional order is for 40 Global 5000, 40 Global 6000 and 6 Global 8000 jets.

The order will be spread out, Doerksen said, with the firm portion likely spanning seven years.

GAINING MARKET SHARE

"These orders reinforce the outlook for solid growth in production rates in the large-cabin business aircraft segment over the next several years," said BMO Capital Markets analyst Fadi Chamoun. "Bombardier continues to gain market share in business jets through strong product positioning."

Bombardier's Global aircraft compare favorably with rival planes on the key characteristics of cabin volume and flight range, said RBC Capital Markets analyst Walter Spracklin.

"The huge order from VistaJet establishes the Global as the predominate large-cabin, ultra-range business aircraft," he said.

It also serves to "shore up" Bombardier's business jet segment, bumping the Global production backlog well above the current 34 months, he added.

Bombardier shares jumped 8 percent, or 25 Canadian cents, to C$3.37 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Tuesday. Year-to-date, the stock is down about 19 percent.

The VistaJet order comes three weeks after Bombardier pushed back the first flight of its new C-Series jetliner by six months due to delayed deliveries from suppliers, sending its shares lower.

Investors worried that Bombardier would not be able to meet its new deadline and that it would have to discount the aircraft to boost sales.

Doerksen said he remains cautious on Bombardier shares due to lingering uncertainty about the C-Series development schedule, the potential for weaker margin guidance when the company reports fourth-quarter results, and the risk that weak free cash flow will linger through 2013.

Cancer survivor hands out scarves to chemotherapy patients

An East Tennessee cancer survivor is on a mission to help fellow cancer patients feel sassy when they cover up their head with a hat or scarf.

Samantha Garcia has endured two rounds of breast cancer.

She says she hated the feeling of being stared at when she wore a scarf to cover up her head during cancer treatments.

Garcia wants to do away with that stigma, make scarves sassy, and just support other cancer patients.

So, she and her friend started a?Facebook?page?and received more than three hundred scarves and hats from across the county.?

Wednesday, they spent the day at the new UT Cancer Institute, handing out their loot for free?to cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Samantha's friend, Jeana Vaughn, said, "When someone takes one of these?I want them to know, first of all, that someone has been through it and, second of all, someone else thought to donate it. So, you have somebody who has been through that, tells you you do get through it, and someone else who donated it who is thinking of you and wanting you to get through it."

This?was their first time handing out the scarves. The women hope other?women and men feel empowered and know wearing a scarf is not something to be embarrassed about.

As a result of rapid technological development, mobile phones that provide access to internet are used by a majority of the population. With this, internet is finding its place in every household. A lot of people keep themselves updated with the latest news and services with the help of internet. Nevertheless a large number of people still depend on the results provided by the search engine as they remain to be unaware about the precise site to be referred for their query. Users just enter keywords related to their query on a search engine and rely on the information provided by the websites that top the list of results.

SEO India companies do a keyword search for their clients and relate the keywords entered by the users, with the type of service or product offered. The keywords are then incorporated in the content of the company website in a unique way. This assures that the client's website is referred by the search engine and tops the list of searches made by an internet user.

Merely creating a website would not lead to growth of a business. It is necessary to attract traffic and convert the visitors into consumers. Augmentation is possible only when users who visit the website find it reliable, error-free and user-friendly. Keeping these points in mind, SEO companies provide their clients with original content that is complete and free from plagiarism. The content describes every minute aspect of the provided service or product, in an understandable manner.

These SEO India companies also build links of their client's website on other commonly visited websites. This process is called link building and helps in attracting traffic towards a particular website. When users find the site of a particular service or product interesting and complete, they are sure to try the same. This eventually results in profit of the business in a large extent.

Even though there are a lot of companies that offer SEO services India at reasonable rates, it is advised to check for their credibility before signing a deal with any of them. 'Zero Dark Thirty': What's the story behind the film about bin Laden? (+video)

The plot of 'Zero Dark Thirty,' the movie by 'Hurt Locker' director Kathryn Bigelow, has been shrouded in secrecy. Check out the trailer to learn more.

The new trailer for Hurt Locker screenwriter Mark Boal and director Kathryn Bigelow?s Zero Dark Thirty paints a tense, but vague, picture of their film ? which is about the decade-long manhunt for Osama bin Laden that culminated with Navy SEAL Team Six?s successful raid on the al-Qaeda head?s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.?We all know what the final outcome was, so the devil?s in the details.

Skip to next paragraph Screen Rant

Screen Rant had a humble start back in 2003 as a place to rant about some of the dumber stuff related to the movie industry. Since then, the site has grown to cover more and more TV and movie news (and not just the dumb stuff) along with sometimes controversial movie reviews. The goal at Screen Rant is to cover stories and review movies from a middle ground/average person perspective.

Recent posts

Bigelow and Boal have been playing things close to the chest on Zero Dark Thirty, so much so that the teaser trailer was technically the first official confirmation of the film?s cast. The new promo doesn?t shed light on how the duo are compressing so much information into a coherent narrative, though it does offer a quick sketch of the more central players in the film.

Judging by the new trailer, it appears Zero Dark Thirty partially centers on the efforts of an intelligence agent played by Oscar-nominee Jessica Chastain (Tree of Life, The Help), who uncovers vital information that could lead U.S. military forces to bin Laden?s secret location. However, we also glimpse important participants like Mark Strong and Kyle Chandler as fellow CIA agents, Joel and Nash Edgerton as members of SEAL Team Six, and James Gandolfini ? who EW has confirmed is playing the current Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta.

Overall, according to Bigelow (via?EW), there are over 100 speakings roles in Zero Dark Thirty, including ?teams of operatives, from [Department of Defense], CIA, Navy SEALs, et al. that intersect with foreign nationals and enemy combatants.? So, although Chastain and Strong get the most screen time in the trailer, this is very much going to be an ensemble piece.

Now, as we?ve discussed in the past, there?s no doubt that Bigelow and Boal have their work cut out for them. It doesn?t matter how exhaustively they?ve researched the history behind the bin Laden manhunt ? or how few liberties they take with the facts ? Zero Dark Thirty is going to take a pounding from all corners of the political spectrum, with contradictory accusations about its alleged socio-political biases and fabrications flying in every direction?(thank goodness the U.S. election will be over by that point).

However, few filmmakers know how to create pulse-pounding suspense and nerve-wracking thrills like Bigelow. Plus, she and Boal demonstrated they know how to create enthralling cinema together with the Best Picture-winning Hurt Locker. So, on those grounds, this movie?s easily worth recommending for anyone who?s just interested in an intense, well-acted viewing experience.

New guy is right. Women are material creatures.

In these days, you can get 2 hours with a bombshell hottie escort in whatever flavor you want, with a cherry on top for $300 to tide you over as well.? Google escorts + your city.? Stay away from the $50 specials....? Lol!

Im not looking for sex. Im looking for a friend, someone to talk to, someone to spend time with. It is depressing being alone all the time and I am becoming more and more anti-social as the days go by. My panic attacks are getting worse too when im around other people. All I do is try to stay strong and "man the fuck up", and nothing positive comes from it. This dating site thing was a last ditch effort to try to meet people... I havent felt SO shitty and worthless than I do now. I try to rationalize it and think of reasons why not a single fucking person has even given me even a shred of a chance, like maybe I posted some bad pictures or maybe my profile is poorly written. I seriously do not understand anymore and its making me hate who I am... like Im not good enough for ANYONE, not a single fucking human being on this planet:sad: It is SO disheartening, I cannot begin to express the pain I feel on a daily basis, because I feel like such a loser, SUCH a loner.

What is the point of all this pain? What is the point of trying SO FUCKING HARD and seeing 0 results? Not even once! I cannot even justify those odds with a positive thought.

hey, OP, have you thought about maybe attending some local shroomery gatherings? the people here are great and many of them would love to be your friends, i'm sure.

i'm probably not anywhere close to you, i'm not really close to anyone, but i do have a PM box that is always open to those who wish to use it. i know you want someone to hang out with, but i can offer what i can give. if you ever need to really talk, just shoot me a PM and you can have at least a moment of my time, mostly likely more.

(don't be discouraged if i don't respond RIGHT away though, i will thoughtfully respond when i know i have sufficient time to. ^_^)

Sorry to hear your situation.? The only advice I can offer up is to figure out what hobbies and activities you enjoy outside of work, and engage in them locally.? Sharing time in a group with people who share your interest is a inherent precursor to friends.

I recently broke up with my long-term girlfriend after we had moved together to a new city.? Now I've lost my social safety net, and I've gotta get back into the world again.? I'm about go embark on the same journey you NEED to embark on:

Seeking out local interests.

Go do it. Today.

Join a chess club, yoga, shooting club, local kickball league, ANYTHING.? Just go there, try to be friendly but not creepy/needy/isolated/etc.? You know, all that normal shit.

Try to have a good time.? Grab a drink or two at home before you go to the place if you want to take a edge off (just don't become reliant on this, or people might pick up on it and assume you an alcoholic).

ive become VERY VERY withheld when it comes to meeting groups of people... i have panic attacks even being around good people... and I do actually do Yoga, which I LOVE. Im afraid to show weakness around people. and even when im doing yoga, which is supposed to be extremely relaxing.. it takes a LOT to hold back the panic attacks.
