Spending Christmas with the Queen at Sandringham is one of the traditions of marrying into the Royal family, but the Duchess of Cambridge will miss the experience this year.

She is to spend Christmas Day with her family at their house in Berkshire as she copes with her difficult pregnancy. The Duke of Cambridge faces a dilemma over where he will spend the day.

?As things stand, Catherine and her family do not feel confident about her going to Norfolk,? one of her friends tells?Mandrake. ?They would rather that she stays a quick drive away from hospital. William will probably go to Sandringham, but they are not sure whether he will go for Christmas Day or later in the holiday.?

Last year, thousands of well-wishers turned out to see the?Duchess of Cambridge?attend her first Christmas Day service at church in Sandringham.

She was discharged from the King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone 10 days ago. A St James?s Palace spokesman said she was suffering from?hyperemesis gravidarum, severe morning sickness.

Since then, she has cancelled all of her scheduled engagements.?Prince William?attended two, but cancelled one last Sunday to support his wife at home.

At a charity tennis gala the previous night, he told a guest: ?I don?t know why they call it morning sickness ? they should call it all-day and all-night sickness.?

William may be tempted to forsake the traditions of Sandringham in favour of the lively celebrations on offer in Berkhire. The Duchess?s sister, Pippa Middleton, writes in the Christmas edition of?The Spectatorthat their father, Michael, usually dresses up in costume.

?Home is, happily, where I?ll be this year,? she says. ?The Middletons? Christmas should be blissfully calm. We?re good at keeping each other?s spirits up.

?My father has developed this funny tradition of surprising us at some point by appearing in fancy dress. He buys a new costume each year and, typically, gets a bit carried away ? a couple of Christmases ago, he appeared in an inflatable sumo outfit. It?s endearing, really, and only quite embarrassing.?

Last year, the Duke of Edinburgh missed the celebrations at Sandringham after being taken ill two days before Christmas. He spent four days at Papworth Hospital, in Cambridgeshire, after undergoing heart surgery. The Queen and her four children travelled by helicopter when they visited him on Boxing Day.
