Mayoral, city council candidates: Fremont needs jobs, more development
A common theme among statements made by Fremont City Council and mayoral candidates last week was that the city needs more jobs and new development in order to get back on track.
All five candidates for mayor participated in a forum held by the Fremont Chamber of Commerce Sept. 19 at Fremont Adult School. It was the first candidates forum held for both the mayoral and council seats up for grabs this November.
This year, the mayoral candidates are Aziz Akbari, Steve Cho, Bill Harrison, Anu Natarajan and Linda Susoev.
None were more vocal about job growth and attracting businesses to the city than former Councilman Steve Cho and newcomer Aziz Akbari.
Cho said businesses will only come to Fremont if the mayor promotes the city in a positive light.
"We think we're business friendly, but we're not," he said. "I keep hearing from businesses who want to come here that we're not. We need to create incentives for people to come here."
Cho said the city has the vacant space to accommodate several businesses, and if Fremont could just attract one Fortune 500 company, it could get the ball rolling.
Akbari expressed similar concerns, adding Fremont is a prime location for big companies as it sits between two major freeways. However, he said other markets in the Bay Area primarily San Francisco and San Jose are 30 percent cheaper when it comes to rent.
"We have a lot of companies that want to come here," he said. "But we have a lot of roadblocks within the city
government. We need to market the city as a place to come out and shop in, to stay in, so we can attract more jobs here."But Councilman Harrison said Fremont should also focus on bringing in more small business, as those bring revenue to the city.
"Fremont needs to concentrate not only on bringing big businesses here," he said. "We need to focus on a balance with small businesses. We need to work with these businesses to streamline the process, bring them here and get people back to work."
When it came to listing off incentives that might attract any business to Fremont, all the candidates drew blanks. Cho suggested, however, reducing business taxes, or not charging business the full cost to come to Fremont up front.
Vice Mayor Natarajan noted the city's plan to develop in Warm Springs around the Tesla Motors plant as an innovation that will bring more development and jobs here.
"I'm proud of the work we've done as a community and a city council," she said. "The opportunity we have in Warm Springs will be the center for job growth and development. We even brought in the Urban Land Institute, which reviewed our plans and said there is great potential there."
Mayoral candidate Susoev agreed with the others that more jobs need to be created.
During the council candidates forum later in the evening, Vinnie Bacon expressed the same concerns. He said the city needs to make sure the voices of potential businesses coming to Fremont are heard.
"Fremont has a reputation for not being very friendly towards businesses," Bacon said. "I've been hearing that this is a known issue and the city is looking into fixing the problem. But we need a change in attitude form the highest people in our leadership."
However, incumbent Sue Chan echoed Natarajan's statement that the ball is rolling when it comes to development and creating more jobs. Chan also highlighted the developments underway in Warm Springs, as well as Fremont's future downtown.
She also noted Seagate recently purchased the vacant Solyndra site in the area, and Thermo Fisher recently acquired more land.
"Both areas (downtown and Warm Springs) have potential," she said. "South Fremont clearly has an anchor in Tesla Motors. We're trying to create a 21st Century job center, and Tesla will be the anchor to bringing similar businesses to the area."
Other candidates disagreed with Chan's sentiment though.
John J. Dutra and Mark Wadley, both newcomers to the political arena, said the focus needed to be on bringing new and unique businesses to the city.
Dutra said a high tech anchor will bring similar businesses to Fremont but won't generate much revenue, and that's not what the city needs.
"Look at the past 20 years," he said. "Look at the Hub or Pacific Commons. They were developed with the city supporting them. We need businesses like those that will attract people from other cities."
Wadley agreed, stating a commercial or retail anchor would bring smaller, yet popular and similar businesses around it.
"We need to promote incentives to bringing large businesses in, like tax credits for buying local," Dutra added. "We basically need to work within the city to bring these large businesses in and allow them to bring others in as well."
Rick Jones, a former Fremont police officer who is also running for the first time, said the city should use its diverse population to bring more people in.
He said the city's plan to build a cultural arts center in downtown would bring people to Fremont, and most likely inspire them to stay.
"You get to experience so much of what happens around the world through the eyes of the people who live here," Jones said. "If you can get a cultural arts center here, it would be a model. But it would have to be a venture between corporations, the city and private donations."
Rakesh Sharma, a former planning commissioner, had a completely different take on future development.
Sharma said he was tired of hearing about plans for downtown a proposed destination he said that has been in the works for more than 20 years and felt the city should focus on revamping Centerville before starting any other development center projects.
"Centerville is a $10 million to $15 million project we can get done, and it will bring revenue," he said. "Once we get done with that area and we see that it's working, you can start on a bigger area that will attract people from all over the Bay Area."

MOGADISHU, Somalia --?Somalia's al-Shabab rebels withdrew from the southern Somali city of Kismayo overnight, the rebel group and residents said Saturday, a day after Kenyan and Somali government forces attacked the militants' last bastion.
?We moved out our fighters ... from Kismayo at midnight,'' al-Shabab spokesman, Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, told Reuters.
He threatened to strike back soon. ?The enemies have not yet entered the town. Let them enter ?Kismayo which will soon turn into a battlefield,? he said.
African Union troops from Kenya, Uganda and Burundi have combined over the last 18 months to kick al-Shabab out of the Somali capital Mogadishu and take a series of smaller towns that the insurgents fled to.
Al-Shabab, which formally merged with al-Qaida in February, had earned money by collecting taxes on goods arriving at the Indian Ocean port, so the loss of the stronghold is a double blow to the armed fundamentalist group that began attacks in 2007 and went on to control all but a few blocks of the capital.

The article heavily quotes our very own Apartment Therapy commenters and writer Sarah Dobbins, and claims that women today feel pressured and stressed about home decor to the point that they have self-esteem issues.
According to the article, women haven't devoted as much attention "to the minutiae of kitchen towels, bathroom grouting and indoor plant trends" since the 1950's. It claims that women feel they need to keep up with design trends to measure up to peers and feel in control of their lives. This stress, they say, has increased over the past five years along with the rise of online decor images and sites like Pinterest. What a far cry from our moto of "Saving the World, One Room at a Time" and Apartment Therapy's mission, beliefs and goals.

Crossfit for Kids: Is it Dangerous or Healthy?
CrossFit?has nearly become a household name in the last several years. Known for its intense, non-sense WOD (workout of the day), CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program that focuses on?muscle confusion. Participants rarely do the same thing twice in one week, opting for a 10K one day, 100 kettle bell swings the following day, and 40 power cleans the next. ?
Because of its intense nature, often involving serious weight lifting, many have wondered if it?s safe for children. According to Jeff Martin, co-founder of CrossFit Kids, it certainly is.
Martin and his wife, Mikki, founded their fitness center for children back in 2004. Their goal? To combine exercise and fun. Over the last several years, the concept has taken off and hundreds of CrossFit Kids classes now take place in cities around the U.S. and beyond.
CrossFit DoneRight, a similar company in Rockville, Maryland, is now one of many kid-focused CrossFit gyms, including dozens in the D.C. area alone. As reported by NPR, kids as young as 4 years old are now participating in CrossFit, which has left some concerned about how safe it really is.
Among the concerned is?Dr. Tim Hewett, whose primarily worried about potential injury, which can occur if trainers aren?t teaching proper weight lifting techniques.?Hewett speaks from a place of experience as both a former power lifter and director of the Sports Medicine?Biodynamics?Center at the University of Cincinnati.
?What kids are attempting to do is Olympic lifts like a snatch or a clean and jerk, and they don?t have the power to properly perform the exercise to bring it up to their shoulders and then bring it over their head,? he told NPR?s The Salt. ?So they?re grabbing this thing at their waist and they?re trying to twist and turn their torso, which is putting their spine at significant risk with weights that are greater than they can handle.?
Instead of CrossFit, Hewett would contend kids should be doing kid-appropriate activities, like going on walks, going to the playground, or playing low-impact sports.
However, CrossFit Done Right owner Justin Bacon, argues that the exercises he teaches are broken down into classes for three age groups: 4-6 year olds, 7-12 year olds, and teens. By individualizing the workouts based on level of maturity, he ensures each child is assigned age-appropriate activities to avoid injury. While he would admit the workouts are difficult, Bacon believes they?re different than adult-style CrossFit workouts and totally?suitable for kids.
Stay-at-home mom and food blogger, Katie from Yes, I Want Cake, was attracted to Crossfit years ago because she how hard her husband worked at it and how impressive his results were. After trying it for herself the first time, she was hooked and loved the feeling of accomplishment that came with doing a really intense workout.
A loyal follower for years now, Katie?doesn?t feel the workouts are inappropriate for kids.??I absolutely think it would be healthy for kids to start Crossfit. Obviously the emphasis would need to be on learning about exercise and having fun ? not about how much weight they can lift,? she said. ?To me, it?s the same thing as any organized sport that is offered to kids.?Providing that the emphasis is on learning the building blocks of lifts, having fun, and being active, a?Crossfit?class for 4 year olds doesn?t seem any different to me than a gymnastics class, soccer team, or swim lessons for a 4 year old.?
Katie?s daughter, Adrienne, is now 1 and hopes she?ll continues to grow curious about fitness and healthy living. ?I would love my daughter to get involved at a young age! At 1 year old, she already plays with medicine balls, hangs on rings, and tries to do handstands,? she said, ?Those are just skills she?s picked up from watching my husband and I.?
Though Diets in Review running expert, Lacy Hansen isn?t a CrossFit buff, she has participated in several running events with her now 8-year-old son, Judah. He started running at age 3 when he and Lacy participated in their first race together. Because he wasn?t a big fan at first, Lacy had to learn how to encourage rather than force him into it.
?I had to learn to stop pushing him. He would cry or just shut down when I would push him too hard,? she said. ?He?d get mad and the whole experience was negative.??In those times, she feared the negativity he was beginning to associate with exercise would make him hate running forever.?
But for parents who want their kids to grow up to be healthy and enjoy staying active, Lacy offers this advice: ?I went about it the wrong way at first. I had to look at my own life and see that no one pushed me too hard to start running or get into a healthy lifestyle. I came to it on my own?I don?t feel obligated to anyone, I genuinely love it,? she said.
?I think with all things, parents have to set the example, be the influence, but ultimately let the baby bird fly and hope he chooses the right path.?
As for whether or not CrossFit is healthy for young kids, Lacy believes it can be healthy. ?I think some kids really?like?that stuff. Though, I fear two things: One, they may be pushed by a super competitive-minded parent and will resent them and/or the activity in the future. And two: Too much exercise, like weight training, can be bad for a child?s body.?
So for parents who want to introduce their kids to exercise at a young age, go ahead. But be careful both in your approach and the activity you choose. Otherwise, it could end up having the opposite effect; or worse, it could result in injury.

Shock Claim: Canadian Police Ignored Potential Evidence Of ...

Those tapes will be played for the Charbonneau Commission in the coming days.
Although Sebastiano identified several big players in the construction trade who he claims visited the social clubs he "did not point the finger at any specific company executives who handed over the cash" as reported by CBC.

Are there any fighters who can beat Jon Jones?
Jon Jones' win on Saturday night was awe-inspiring. He survived a grotesque armbar, and came back to win with fourth-round submission. He seems to keep getting better and better with each fight, this time incorporating jiu-jitsu skills into his win. At the moment, he appears unbeatable.
Are there any fighters in the UFC who can eventually take him on and win? Any fighters who can take time to study Jones, figure out his every move, and then finally solve the Jon Jones puzzle?
Dan Henderson: The one-time PRIDE and Strikeforce champion was supposed to fight Jones before he was injured and UFC 151 was canceled. He has already put in the time and effort to fight Jones, and may already have him figured out. His age is an issue, but Henderson still wants the fight.
Alexander Gustaffson: One of Jones' biggest advantages is his reach. He was able to hold Belfort at bay throughout the fight by simply extending his arm. At 6-foot-5, Gustafsson is an inch taller. He has a fight lined up with former champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua who will show if "The Viking" is ready for the next step.
Chael Sonnen: Based on Sonnen's inability to handle Anderson Silva in their last fight, there is no reason to believe Sonnen could beat Jones. However, the run-up to the fight would be so much fun. Considering the UFC put Jones up against a middleweight who lost a title shot, integrity of the belt doesn't matter as much as entertainment or making money. Sonnen has already shown he can get under Jones' skin in a way no one else has, and that just may give him the edge in a bout.
Anderson Silva: Could he beat Jones? Yes. Will this fight ever, ever happen? No. Silva keeps talking about wanting a fight with welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, and he does have a few challenges waiting for him at middleweight.

I am looking for someone to help me create a strategic business plan/budget for a new cafe business I am planning to open. I am looking for someone to help me put together all my start-up costs, expected fixed expenses for the first year of business, variable costs analysis, and anything else that is of relevance into a strategy plan that basically shows my break-even point, my target sales number for each month of the year. I am hoping this can be done in excel and is easy for me to modify myself, but also I am looking for someone that I can consult to from time to time to help me re-evaluate my performance. In terms of budget for this project, I am not willing to pay a hefty price for this project, I am testing the waters to see what kind of response I get. Facebook Mobile Payments Via Carrier Billing (And Bango) Now Live In U.S., UK And Germany
Another step ahead for Facebook's strategy to make more money out of its mobile business: the company is now accepting mobile payments for its mobile web service via carrier billing in the U.S., UK and Germany, with further rollouts coming this year. The option of letting users bill services like virtual gifts and game credits to their mobile phone operators was first announced in February 2012, and means that users do not need to use premium SMS or credit cards in order to buy these: it's a one-click system. Facebook's using billing company Bango for the billing. Bango also provides similar services for BlackBerry's App World, Opera's Mobile Store and Google Play. United front: Alastair Cook says England must be happy campers to beat India

Alastair Cook has rubbished any notion of problems existing in the England dressing room as the Kevin Pietersen affair rumbles on ahead of his first tour as Test captain.
Cook, who will enjoy a fortnight?s honeymoon in Argentina before leading his team into a four-Test series in India next month, knows team spirit will be vital in his bid for an historic win.
England have not triumphed in a Test series on Indian since 1984-85, the winter in which Cook was born.
It makes this the final frontier for a team that broke their 24-year Ashes hoodoo in Australia so spectacularly two years ago.
The 27-year-old has kept his own counsel on the subject of KP until now, but offered a fairly combative response to the accusations flying around that a powerful group of senior players were in some way responsible for the ostracising of Pietersen.
Cook said: ?No, I don?t see there are out-of-control egos and cliques running the dressing room. That is not how I see it at all. It?s the same dressing room praised for our team spirit and how we went about things for 18 months.
?Clearly, since the Headingley Test match everyone has thrown that out of the window, saying that we are not a united team because of the circumstances. A lot of that is just speculation because of what is happening at the ?moment behind closed doors.
?People don?t really know what is going on.
?Like any team you always have to work on it. You can?t take team spirit and team unity for granted, especially now that we have got some new faces we are going to have ?to introduce them and make them feel comfortable.
?It?s an area we can all work on and always improve, but India is one of those places that can strengthen team ?spirit because you end up in each ?other?s pockets for two months. I?m hoping that bonds us as a team because we can do something special.?
Cook has also made his first call since ?succeeding Andrew Strauss at the helm ? the man who will be his vice-captain.
He said: ?It is a big decision and we haven?t announced it yet because of circumstances going on, and everyone being out of the country.?
